Year 7 Support
Transition at West Monmouth School
The following schools are our main feeder schools:
- New Inn Primary
- Griffithstown Primary
- George Street Primary
- Penygarn Primary
We also welcome pupils from other schools within the locality, and pupils from other areas.
We have excellent links with all of our feeder schools and work closely with our primary colleagues in order to provide continuity and progression for your child as they move onto their secondary education.
Our successful transition programme includes opportunities for pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 to visit us, to participate in activities and to become familiar with the school and its staff. These visits help to provide a smooth and trouble-free transition for your child.
In the summer term of Year 5, we hold an Open Evening, which provides an opportunity for parents/carers to visit the school and visit each subject area, view some of the work completed by pupils, speak to staff and sample the canteen menu. We also hold an Open Morning in the autumn term of Year 6, which provides another opportunity for parents/carers to visit us on a normal working day; to have a guided tour of the school and speak to pupils and staff.
The Head of Year 7 will liaise with the Year 6 teachers to gather important information about each child transferring to us. All information about the pupils will be shared; such as academic information, achievements and interests and also friendship groups. This very important process of sharing information will help provide a smooth and trouble-free transition for each pupil.
For many reasons, some pupils will require an enhanced transition programme, and this will be carefully planned according to the individual pupil.
The member of staff with responsibility for transition and links to primary schools is Miss Claire Hughes, Deputy Headteacher. If you have any queries regarding transition at West Monmouth please contact claire.hughes@wms.schoolsedu.org.uk
