Library

The library was the culmination of several years of planning and has come a long way from its start, we are incredibly proud of the finished facility. We have grown into a bright, relaxing and very well used room with an extensive range of fiction and non-fiction for our pupils to enjoy.

Year 7 & 8 visit the library to enjoy lessons linked into the Literacy and Numeracy Framework once a fortnight and the lessons are designed to be fun and to promote a love of reading in the pupils. Year 7,8 & 9 also follow the Accelerated Reader Program which is talked about below.

The library is also a hive of activity at lunch and break times with many children meeting to share books and read, play literacy-based games, play board games and to catch up on homework.

The library is open every breaktime, lunchtime Monday to Friday.

After school we are open 3-4 Monday to Thursday for homework club/

Monday we also have writing Club with Local author Mr Finlan.

Wednesday, we have Warhammer Club.

Accelerated Reader

With the Accelerated Reader programme, all students are encouraged to develop a love of reading and develop their literacy as an essential life skill.

The Accelerated Reader programme was introduced to promote reading across West Monmouth School in May 2021. The students of Years 7, 8 and 9 are assessed once a term using STAR tests to obtain their literacy levels. On the basis of these assessments, they are guided towards appropriate books that they can enjoy and understand (as well as providing a little bit of challenge!).

The aim of the programme is to ensure all students:

  • read books regularly
  • are guided to books of a level appropriate to their reading ability
  • have their reading skills assessed through quick quizzes when they finish each book
  • are supported to improve their reading skills and measure their progress
  • encourages students to read at home and in other free time.
  • Students will be allocated 20 minutes of quiet reading time every day known as Drop Everything and read, as well as a bi-weekly library lesson as part of their English curriculum.
